FINDING YOUR PLACE
A better way to build your shortlist
ThereAway editorial · 28 October 2026
A strong shortlist starts with the way you want to live. House prices, stations and local services help you compare places, but the right trade-offs depend on you.
Choose your essentials first
Start with a realistic housing budget and a small number of priorities. A requirement such as staying close to family can narrow your search more effectively than asking for every desirable feature at once. Use Essential only where you would actually rule a place out.
Read the compromises
A high overall match can still contain a weak point. Open the location guide and check transport, everyday services and any essential requirements. An area estimate deserves a different level of confidence from a local observation.
Compare the same evidence
A completed-sale sample and a council-area average describe different things. Neither establishes what a particular home will cost. Keep the evidence label attached when comparing two locations.
Turn the shortlist into a visit
Save three or four promising places, add private notes and visit at different times. Try the actual journey, walk from the station, check school admissions and verify property-level broadband and flood information. Use the map to discover possibilities, then use direct checks to make your decision.
